Everyone has heard the phrase, “April showers bring May flowers.” The full moon in May is sometimes called the Flower Moon and associated with the abundance of flowers that bloom in North America during May, marking the apex of spring and symbolizing spiritual growth, renewal, and fertility.

Killers of the Flower Moon is a book by David Grann that thoroughly investigates the string of murders of wealthy Osage tribal members of the early 1920s.          

When oil (aka black gold ) was discovered on Osage lands members of the tribe became wealthy by leasing their mineral rights, and after the turn of the twentieth century when a pipeline was constructed oil production boomed. The Osage Indian territory’s rich oil fields fueled the success of such industry giants of the time such as Phillips Petroleum and Standard Oil. Each Osage tribal member received a portion of the lease proceeds, known as headrights. As millions of barrels of oil gushed, however, greed reared its head.

At least 24 members of the Osage tribe in Oklahoma died under suspicious circumstances between 1921-1926, although some think that number should be much higher.

William King Hale aka W.K. Hale was an Oklahoma cattleman and pillar of the community. He was also considered the mastermind behind the Oklahoma reign of terror and Osage murders, described in David Grann’s book and the film based on the book. Even now, locals hide his photograph from historical displays calling him “the devil.”

William King Hale was born on December 24, 1874, in Texas, and started out as a lowly cowboy but worked his way up until he eventually owned a large cattle ranch. Although Hale did not actually kill anyone with his own hand, he contracted the murders, sometimes assigning the task of finding a hitman to his nephews. He hoped to benefit from the deaths by putting a controlling interest in valuable tribal headrights in his family’s hands via inheritance or through insurance policies payable to him. Although only convicted of involvement in one murder, it was widely accepted that he was responsible for a plot to procure the headrights of an entire family of wealthy Osage Indians by murdering the relatives of his nephew’s wife. Some were poisoned, some were shot, and one family had their home blown up with dynamite while they slept.

Hale’s nephew Ernest Burkhart was born on September 11, 1892, and moved from Texas to Oklahoma to work for his uncle when he was nineteen. He married Mollie Kyle a full blooded Osage Indian in 1917. His wife Mollie, a diabetic, was apparently on her way to being slowly poisoned with spiked insulin when her husband was arrested in 1926 by federal agents.

Mollie Kyle was born December 1, 1886. Mollie’s mother, all three of her sisters as well as several cousins passed away under questionable circumstances within the space of a few years. Mollie was left as the heir to the family’s fortunes because she inherited their headrights.

At the time Ernest Burkhart was arrested Mollie was the only living member of her family and due to the order in which they died, had inherited all her dead family member’s headrights. If she died, then Ernest and their chldren would be the beneficiaries of her estate.

A comparison of her chart with Ernest Burkhart’s chart shows a few romantic linkages but also numerous crucial incompatibilities, so she may have been blinded by the much younger Ernest’s charm.

In the chart comparison there is an alarming clash between Mollie’s Saturn and Ernest’s Jupiter, an interchange that usually results in an unsuccessful pairing. Ernest’s Sun is square Mollie’s Chiron, while Ernest’s Neptune and Pluto oppose Mollie’s Sun and Venus. There was a great attraction, but it was unhealthy attraction, too.

Although the Osage community was alarmed by the numerous deaths, they found little relief from local lawmen or even the state investigators because Wiilliam Hale was well connected. He was a member of many community organizations who helped bring a school, hospital, and other benefits to the Osage community, so he was highly respected and could influence local investigators .If you look at W. K. Hale’s chart you will see that Jupiter ruler of good will is trine Vesta, ruler of organizations. When federal investigators closed in, several hired thugs who could testify against him suddenly met an untimely end.

We have often seen the Sun aligned with Xanthus in the charts of killers and although Hale’s chart demonstrates that he was extremely intelligent and admired in the community, he had a natal Sun contraparallel to Xanthus. The unfeeling and murderous qualities of Xanthus will manifest one way or another. Natal Xanthus aligned with someone’s natal Sun could represent someone with an Ink Black Heart.

But it was the testimony of nephew Ernest Burkhart that caused Hale to be convicted of the murders. Burkhart’s natal Saturn was square Hales’s natal Sun. Ernest wasn’t the brightest bulb in the chandelier, but he did not respect Hale’s authority, and he triggered the most unpleasant alignments in Hale’s chart.

In the chart below you will notice that William King Hale was born with natal Mercury and the Moon at extreme declinations, so he was quire intelligent, but he also had natal Sun square Sedna, so he was a greedy bastard at heart. That square might not have been a major factor in his life once he had achieved status as a cattleman and part owner of a bank. That is, until Ernest showed up on his doorstep.

Ernest’s Saturn created a T-square with that Sun square Sedna of Hale’s. Also, Ernest’s natal Mars was parallel to Hale’s natal Sun, and simultaneously contraparallel Hale’s Xanthus. Ernest brought out the worst tendencies in Hale and the combination of their charts was toxic.

Hale’s other nephew Byron Burkhart (aka Bryan) had also married an Osage woman and was involved in the killings. He was born February 21, 1899. His chart has natal Chiron opposing Pluto creating a T-square with Hale’s chart’s Xanthus.

Byron’s chart works better with Hale’s, but Byron’s loyalty could turn on a dime. He quickly turned state’s evidence while Ernest Burkhart hesitated until a car thief and bank robber named Blackie Thompson testified that Ernest Burkhart had tried to hire him for a murder. Byron’s trial ended in a hung jury, while both William Hale and Ernest Burkhart were convicted of murder and incarcerated.

William Hale's relatives said Hale once remarked, "If that damn Ernest had kept his mouth shut we'd be rich today."

NOTE: The good news is that the law was changed in 1925 so that only full blooded Osage tribal members could inherit headrights. Mollie divorced Ernest in 1926 after the trial and was happily remarried until her death at age 50.

Mollie successfully sued in 1931 to have the rights to handle her own money, as in that time and place she was, as an Osage woman, considered "incompetent" to handle her own affairs so was appointed a guardian. Many tribal members including men were declared incompetent and the guardians sometimes embezzled funds or took advantage of their charges.
