KILOMETERS, MILES, FIBONACCI & THE GOLDEN RATIO

For those educated in the U.S. school system the kilometer and metric system might seem like an alien language.

Physical fitness gurus and running enthusiasts know the length of a 5 K or 10 K race but everyone else is stuck wondering what this means in miles. After all, speed limits and odometers are expressed as MPH (miles per hour) in the U.S.

It is possible to convert miles into kilometers and vice versa. One converts kilometers and miles by using either the measure of 1 kilometer equal to 0.62 miles, or 1 mile equals 1.60 kilometers.

Yet there could be an easier way.

The formula above contains numbers that are familiar to some astrologers who use the Fibonacci sequence.

It is possible to use the Fibonacci sequence to quickly convert kilometers to miles.

The Fibonacci sequence is made up of numbers that are the sum of the previous two numbers in the sequence, starting with 0 and 1. The Fibonacci sequence is created thus:
1 is 0+1, 2 is 1+1, 3 is 1+2, 5 is 2+3, and 8 is 3+5.

So, the Fibonacci sequence is: 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144…etc.

The Fibonacci numbers are descriptive of the golden spiral, a form seen in the spiral designs of seashells, the leaf arrangement of plants and even the human body. Humans have 8 fingers, 5 digits on each hand, 3 bones in each finger, 2 bones in 1 thumb, and 1 thumb on each hand.

From Wikipedia: “The golden ratio is the limit of the ratios of successive terms of the Fibonacci sequence (or any Fibonacci-like sequence), as originally shown by Kepler: ... Therefore, if a Fibonacci number is divided by its immediate predecessor in the sequence, the quotient approximates φ; e.g., 987/610 ≈ 1.6180327868852.”

The Golden Ratio is approximately 1.618.

The ratio of the length of the human forearm and the hand reflects the Golden Ratio. This ratio is something that artists rely upon to depict realistic proportions.

Coincidentally, there are 1.609 kilometers in a mile, which is very close to the Golden Ratio of 1.618.

The Golden Ratio very nearly matches the relationship between kilometers and miles.

If you know the Fibonacci sequence you can convert kilometers to miles quickly.

Three miles is five kilometers, five miles is eight kilometers, eight miles is 13 kilometers. A 5 K race is 3 miles and a 10 K race is 6 miles. It's not perfect, since eight miles is actually 12.875 kilometers, but it is close enough for practical purposes.

And should you choose to run an 8 mile race you will be glad to know it will only be 12.875 kilometers.
