HALLOWEEN

October is the month that is famously highlighted with All Hallow's Eve or Halloween. A chat about traditional ways to protect against things that go bump in the night seems appropriate.

Witch's marks (apotropaic marks) were said to protect a home from evil and have been found in medieval buildings, etched into wood and masonry near doorways, chimneys and windows. These hidden marks were meant to protect the occupants from witches or evil spirits who could enter openings and often took the form of a 6, 8, or 12 pointed “daisy” known as a hexafoil.
The circular designs may have been practice pieces for apprentices, since they were made in one continuous motion using a compass, but others believe the design was created to enchant and trap evil spirits in an endless loop. This website has numerous photos of various examples across Great Britain.
The medieval Italian church below used the hexafoil as the most prominent design statement for the building.

Similar daisies were also found in the Pennsylvania Dutch folk art called “hex signs” or fraktur that decorated barns to offer protection against evil spirits. In Pennsylvania Dutch art, the “daisies” were called compass roses but there is no denying that the English tradition was almost identical. Here is a classic hex sign by the late Amish sign painter Jacob Zook.

If you look at this 12 pointed star, it looks like an astrological chart, doesn’t it? Can astrological charts protect us from evil?
